I’ve been playing since the first week of June. I’ve played about 4 times a week up until August then twice a week. I average 102-110 consistently & couldn’t get past 100.
Earlier this week I was playing an amazing game, pure ball strikes, amazing chips & putts BUT all my shots were fading & I didn’t know why. I hit a ball & it felt amazing but still faded. Being furious I did the exact same swing but stopped right where the ball was & immediately noticed the club would rotate from a square face to a very open face & it made me realize that maybe the grips I were using were too thin.
I play mizuno jpx 850 irons on standard Amazon grips. From what I’ve noticed at least, Amazon grips in comparison to golf pride grips are a size smaller. (Ex. A oversize Amazon grip is a midsize golf pride grip) Now understanding that all my shots would end up with a club face opened I regripped all my irons. I went from Amazon standard to a Double Taped Golf Pride MCC4 Midsize Grip. Let me tell you it fixed that problem immediately.
The second I regripped the clubs all my shots had a tiny fade or were dead straight. I knew the grips were amazing the second I put them on that night. I then scheduled a tee time for the next morning excited to use them.
I was 100% certain I was going to break 100. But let me tell you I did not expect the score card to follow.
If you are a beginner like me. Please stop trying to swing so hard, if you use light pressure & let the club gravitate towards the ball and swing itself, it will get rid of 90% of your problems BEFORE the greens. As for your short game, putt in your living room & get foam balls to practice chipping on your house, that’s what made all the difference along with the grips.

I’m on a similar journey myself. I need my irons gripped. The standard grip that came on them is way too small.
Edit: grammar, etc.

Playing golf for 4 months and even shooting 100 consistently, let alone an 84 from changing grips, would be insanely impressive lol
Confused, thought bigger grips would make it harder to close the face *fractionally*.
And gripping too for me would close the face whereas relaxing my hands would lag the club more and result in more open face…
Can I ask the yardages you got out of this? Assuming they were pretty nice given the solid contact.
going from not breaking 100 to breaking 90 is insane lol congratulations, F&#k you! 🤣
